What you will learn
-
Unit 1 - Professional development and reflective practice in Further Education
In this unit, the trainee teacher will understand the importance of maintaining their subject expertise. They will develop and maintain their CPD and will apply theories and models of reflection to evaluate their own practice.
-
Unit 2 - Pedagogic methodologies and curriculum development
By researching contemporary educational theories and practices, the trainee teacher will begin to understand the pedagogic methodologies and apply these to their curriculum development. They will analyse threshold concepts and troublesome knowledge to evaluate various teaching methods. They will then show their understanding of educational policy within FE (Further Education) and be able to plan integrated curriculum strategies.
-
Unit 3 - Understanding learners and educational practices
By analysing the diverse backgrounds and characteristics of their learners, the trainee teacher will understand the range of support needs a learner may have and be able to prepare them for transition and progression. The trainee teacher will also fully understand the purpose of the initial and diagnostic assessment. By analysing the assessment results, the trainee teacher will then be able to develop tailored learning plans and differentiated support.
-
Unit 4 - Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion
Equality, diversity and inclusion are key in all FE settings; by fully understanding these areas, the trainee teacher will be able to implement strategies to promote and integrate E,D and I and to mitigate barriers within their own teaching practice.
-
Unit 5 - Professionalism and inclusive teaching practices
By fully understanding the role of the teacher and the FE skills sector, trainee teachers will be able to apply their professionalism and dual professionalism to impact their teaching practice. Collaboration and effective communication strategies enable effective partnership working within FE.
In this unit, the trainee teacher will learn about roles and responsibilities, government policies that impact FE, and the importance of an inclusive learning environment. They will then be able to contribute to improving quality practices within their setting.
-
Unit 6 - Behaviour management
Effectively managing behaviour within FE requires the trainee teacher to analyse factors that influence learners’ behaviour and apply theoretical knowledge to evaluate their own practice. The trainee teacher will be able to apply effective strategies and evaluate their own practice to create a safe and inclusive learning environment.
-
Unit 7 - Assessment principles and practices
By understanding the purpose and principles of assessment, the trainee teacher can design effective assessments in FE. By using a wide range of assessment strategies and demonstrating flexibility and adaptability, they will be able to assess learning effectively and analyse and interpret assessment data.
-
Unit 8 - Resource development and management for effective learning
Resources play a vital role in education and training in FE, and by understanding the principles of resource development, the trainee teacher will be able to develop and use effective learning material and resources. The trainee teacher must understand the legal requirements and responsibilities when developing and using resources. This unit supports the trainee teacher in creating engaging and interactive resources which are in line with copyright and Data Protection requirements.
-
Unit 9 - Digital pedagogies for teaching and learning
Digital skills are now a key part of the teaching role and the trainee teacher will need to be able to manage effective digital delivery. In this final unit, they will understand the use of educational technologies and digital tools and technology for teaching, learning and assessment. By analysing and evaluating their own digital skills, the trainee teacher will be able to support the learners with their own digital skills and implement new and emerging technologies.

How is this course assessed or examined?
This course is assessed in two ways:
Tutor-marked assignments (TMAs)
Each unit is followed by a tutor-marked assignment (TMA) which will be completed at the end of each module and marked by your tutor.
You will not be required to take an external exam with this course as your portfolio of evidence is internally assessed by us and externally quality assured by the awarding body. The outcomes for each TMA are Achieved or Not Yet Achieved. Your tutor will provide feedback on your work, and should there be any amendments required, they will outline what is needed for you to complete that assignment.
Observation (included)
This course requires ten observations. This means that somebody will need to observe you in practice. This could be in a workplace or a voluntary placement. There is a mandatory practical requirement of 250 hours of teaching practice. These practical observations are as follows:
- Internal Observations – can be conducted by a qualified person within your placement
- External Observations – will be carried out by an Oxbridge Assessor (we’ll visit you)
