The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. It was established in 1913 as the UK's Welfare Workers’ Association (WWA). In 1924, the WWA became the Institute of Industrial Welfare Workers (IIWW) as the scope of its activities broadened. The organisation began to include training and development programs for welfare workers, emphasising the importance of professional standards and education.
By 1931, the institute's remit expanded to include personnel management, leading to another name change: the Institute of Labour Management (ILM). This change marked a significant shift as the organisation started to address a wider range of workplace issues, including employee relations, management practices, and organisational development.
Post-War Growth
Following World War II, the ILM continued to grow and adapt to the changing industrial landscape. In 1946, it was renamed the Institute of Personnel Management (IPM). Becoming a Chartered Institute
In 1994, the IPM merged with the Institute of Training and Development (ITD) to form the Institute of Personnel and Development (IPD).
