The aim of the Practical Endorsement is to ensure that students can apply their theoretical knowledge from A-level courses in a practical setting and demonstrate mastery of both academic and practical skills. This assessment method allows teachers to evaluate student performance in a way that goes beyond traditional exam formats and highlights a student’s confidence in carrying out laboratory or field practices.

When is A-level practical endorsement required?

It is entirely possible to complete (and pass) A-level courses without a practical endorsement. They are only relevant to subjects such as A-level Physics, A-level Chemistry and A-level Biology and then usually just for students that intend on proceeding to University courses that require such practical ability, such as Medicine or Veterinary. Only around 10% of learners tend to require this element of assessment.

If you are unsure whether you need A-level Practical Endorsement, then please check with your university choice as to what entry requirements they have or get in touch with our learning advisers, who will be happy to provide more information.

What to expect when you attend A-level practicals

When you arrive on the day, expect a warm welcome at one of our centres. You will have been prepared prior to attend on what's going to be covered and some of the theory behind it. We have lots of content to get through, so the day(s) will be quite busy but enjoyable. Yes, you will be doing science practicals and getting your hands dirty, so to speak!

A-level practicals

The Practical Endorsement provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their practical skills and understanding of particular topics within their course. This endorsement requires students to complete a variety of tasks which are designed to assess their practical knowledge, including experiments, investigations or other activities. Successful completion of the Practical Endorsement can open up many opportunities for students after leaving school, as it provides evidence that they have mastered the necessary skills to succeed in further studies or employment. It can also help inform universities about applicants' skill levels when considering them for acceptance onto specific university courses.

A-level Chemistry Practical Endorsement

The Chemistry Practical Endorsement for A-level courses is designed to assess student understanding of the practical aspects of chemistry. This type of assessment requires students to demonstrate their ability to carry out experiments, draw valid conclusions based on results and explain their findings accurately. It also tests problem-solving skills within a laboratory environment, helping to ensure that students have gained a full comprehension of the subject area and are comfortable with using practical tools and techniques. The endorsement is an important part of many chemistry courses and can help open up opportunities in further studies or employment after graduation.

A-level Physics Practical Endorsement

The Physics Practical Endorsement for A-level courses is designed to assess students' understanding of the practical aspects of physics. This type of assessment requires students to demonstrate their ability to set up, carry out and record experiments, make observations, come up with appropriate solutions and draw valid conclusions from results. It also tests a student's problem-solving skills as well as their ability to interpret and analyze experimental data accurately. Completion of this endorsement is an important part of many physics courses and can help open up opportunities in further studies or employment after graduation.

A-level Biology Practical Endorsement

The Biology Practical Endorsement for A-level courses is designed to assess a student's understanding of the practical aspects of biology. This type of assessment requires students to demonstrate their ability to carry out experiments, draw valid conclusions based on results and explain their findings accurately. It also tests problem-solving skills within a laboratory environment, helping students gain a greater understanding and appreciation of biology, while at the same time increasing their confidence when using practical tools and techniques.
