More about our Online GCSE courses
What are GCSEs?
GCSEs, or General Certificates of Secondary Education, are academic qualifications typically taken by students in the UK at the end of compulsory schooling, around the age of 16. They cover a wide range of subjects, including English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, and Modern Foreign Languages, among others. Students usually take multiple GCSEs over a two-year period during secondary school, in Years 10 and 11.
GCSEs are important stepping stones for further education and career opportunities. Achieving good grades in core subjects can lead to studying A-levels, vocational qualifications, or apprenticeships. For many jobs and college courses, a pass in GCSE Maths and English is essential. Universities often consider GCSE results alongside A-levels when making admission decisions.
The GCSE grading system in England uses a numerical scale from 9 to 1. Grade 9 is the highest and roughly equivalent to a high A* under the old lettered system. A grade 4 is considered a standard pass (similar to a C), and grade 5 is a strong pass. Wales and Northern Ireland may still use the A* to G system, depending on the exam board.
Completing GCSEs successfully demonstrates a foundational level of knowledge and skills that are valued by employers, colleges, and training providers, forming a key part of a student’s educational journey.
