What you will learn
Below is an outline of the course material you will study:
Unit 1: What archaeology is
In this unit you will develop your understanding of the world of Archaeology and what it is. Exploring the different forms of Archaeology and Archaeologists. You will understand the nature of archaeological evidence and the early pioneers behind it. Delving further in to how it became a science.
Unit 2: History and Prehistory
In this unit you will be exploring the critical periods of history and prehistory. Looking in to the development of humans and their civilisations.
Unit 3: Underwater Archaeology: Beyond the Sea
During this unit you will explore the specialist discipline of underwater archaeology. Delving in to the story of the Titanic’s discovery at the bottom of the ocean. Something that is considered by many to be anything but a success story for archeology.
Unit 4: Archaeological fieldwork and preparing to dig
For unit 4 you will look at the case for or against fieldwork and an archaeological dig. Understanding the different laws, ethics and safety of fieldwork. Lastly, you will assess the logistics of archaeological fieldwork and conducting a dig.
Unit 5: After the dig: processing and analysing the finds and telling the story
For this unit you will discover how evidence is preserved. Looking in to what an archaeological lab is and its role in processing the finds. You will lastly delve in to how some of the puzzles are solved: the what, when, how and where.
Unit 6: The future of archaeology
In this final unit you will consider the future of archaeology which includes exploring the role that modern materials will play; climate change; Space and the digital world.
Course Outcome
At the end of this course, successful learners will receive a certificate of completion and competency from a nationally recognised and respected awarding body.
Examinations and Assessments
Each unit is followed by a written tutor-marked assignment (TMA), which is submitted and then marked by your tutor. You will not be required to take an external exam.
Entry Requirements
While there are no strict entry requirements for this Archaeology Level 3 Diploma, it is strongly recommended that you have the ability to read and write in English effectively.
