You’ll also look at software programs that can be useful, along with the tools you’ll need before you can begin any practical project. Moving on, you’ll find out which pre-planning checks are essential, along with other issues you’ll need to be aware of, such as health and safety.

In this unit, you’ll take a look at the seven elements which need to fit together in any design project. You’ll discover how to plan a layout and determine a focal point, and consider form and function whilst experimenting with furniture. Next, you’ll think about how to achieve the correct colour balance, how colour can affect a room’s visual proportions, and how to balance colours to achieve a sense of harmony. Moving on, you’ll delve into textures and patterns, and use lines to draw an observer’s eyes to a chosen focal point.

To open unit five, you’ll take a look at architectural details such as dado rails, columns, and pediments. You’ll discover the many different types of window frames and doors, find out how to choose the perfect flooring for every style of room, as well as the correct type of lighting. Moving on, you’ll consider wall treatments, and the factors that might impact whether you choose features such as wallpaper, sponging, or stippling. You’ll also study different types of furniture, and how to ensure you’re making the correct choices for your clients, as well as the finishing touches such as cushions and rugs.

In the final unit, you’ll begin by taking a look at the essential characteristics and skills that every interior designer needs to make it in the industry. Moving on, you’ll discover how to manage an interior design project from scratch, and think about how to set your rate and build up a portfolio. Next, you’ll consider whether setting up your own business is the right choice for you, the business skills you’ll need if you decide to take the plunge, and how to write your business plan. You’ll also think about how to advertise and market your services, consider your budget and earning projections, and discover the tax and insurance factors you’ll need to be aware of.
