On this level 3 course, you’ll learn everything there is to know about interior design – quite literally, from floor to ceiling!
You’ll take a close look interior design and its fascinating history; including famous designers of the past whose styles and ideas are still influential today. You’ll discover how to recreate a huge variety of design styles, and how to plan an entire project from scratch. You’ll study the seven essential elements of interior design, along with physical features such as architecture, fabrics, and lighting. Best of all, you’ll discover how to make a living as an interior designer, including how to conduct market research, set up your own business, and manage projects independently. And, as you study in your own time, at your own pace, you’ll enjoy unlimited tutor support.

Below is an outline of the course material you will study:
Unit 1: The History of Interior Design
Every professional interior designer needs to be familiar with its fascinating history, and that’s exactly what you’ll delve into in unit one. You’ll discover design preferences throughout history, from the extravagant styles of the Ancient Egyptians, through to Art Deco and Art Nouveau. You’ll learn about great designers of the recent past such as Antoni Gaudi and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, along with their signature styles.
Unit 2: Interior Design Styles
In unit two, you’ll discover how to create stunning interior design in a range of styles that still reflect the personality and preferences of your client. You’ll examine formal, casual, and rustic styles, as well as design concepts that embrace ecological considerations.
Unit 3: Planning an Interior Design Project
In unit three, you’ll take a look at the step-by-step process of planning an interior design space. You’ll discover how to gauge the size of your project and create a file, determine your budget, and move on to create sketches and plans of your ideas. You’ll also look at software programs that can be useful, along with the tools you’ll need before you can begin any practical project. Moving on, you’ll find out which pre-planning checks are essential, along with other issues you’ll need to be aware of, such as health and safety.
Unit 4: Design Elements
In this unit, you’ll take a look at the seven elements which need to fit together in any design project. You’ll discover how to plan a layout and determine a focal point, and consider form and function whilst experimenting with furniture. Next, you’ll think about how to achieve the correct colour balance, how colour can affect a room’s visual proportions, and how to balance colours to achieve a sense of harmony. Moving on, you’ll delve into textures and patterns, and use lines to draw an observer’s eyes to a chosen focal point.
Unit 5: Physical Elements of the Design
To open unit five, you’ll take a look at architectural details such as dado rails, columns, and pediments. You’ll discover the many different types of window frames and doors, find out how to choose the perfect flooring for every style of room, as well as the correct type of lighting. Moving on, you’ll consider wall treatments, and the factors that might impact whether you choose features such as wallpaper, sponging, or stippling. You’ll also study different types of furniture, and how to ensure you’re making the correct choices for your clients, as well as the finishing touches such as cushions and rugs.
Unit 6: Making a Living from Interior Design
In the final unit, you’ll begin by taking a look at the essential characteristics and skills that every interior designer needs to make it in the industry. Moving on, you’ll discover how to manage an interior design project from scratch, and think about how to set your rate and build up a portfolio. Next, you’ll consider whether setting up your own business is the right choice for you, the business skills you’ll need if you decide to take the plunge, and how to write your business plan. You’ll also think about how to advertise and market your services, consider your budget and earning projections, and discover the tax and insurance factors you’ll need to be aware of.
Course Outcome

Examinations and Assessments
Each unit is followed by a written tutor-marked assignment (TMA), which is submitted and then marked by your tutor. You will not be required to take an external exam.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, it is recommended that you have an intermediate ability to read and write English. There is a minimum study age of 16.
