The History Of The London Institute of Banking & Finance
A small group of bankers formed the London Institute of Banking & Finance in March 1879. By 1993, it had merged with the Chartered Building Societies’ Institute and created its first professional award in 1996.
In 2013, the LIBF was granted a University College title and became IFS University College. Their university campus was opened at Lovat Lane in London for full-time students. 2019 saw the company celebrate their 140th birthday!
In 1997, a new brand, the Institute of Financial Services, was introduced to reflect the evolving nature of the organisation's services into the wider financial services sector. In 2006, changes to the Royal Charter were approved by the Privy Council, and the organisation was renamed the ifs School of Finance.
This process led to the IFS School of Finance moving to a new campus in the City of London in 2008 and, in 2010, culminating in it becoming the first and only educational body with a specific focus on finance to be granted Taught Degree-Awarding Powers. In August 2013, the organisation was granted the University College title by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills.
The Institute of Financial Services is the professional body of IFs University College, a registered charity incorporated by Royal Charter. The IFs support and promote professionalism in the financial services industry through the provision of benchmark qualifications, membership, and continuing professional development services.
