Despite the name, our Zoology course will do more than just qualify you to work in a zoo. The science, research, data, analysis, and behavioural skills you’ll learn can make you attractive to a wide variety of organisations including charities, government agencies, universities, and research centres.

Zoology is the scientific study of animal life, from the very smallest animal to the very largest animal. Zoologists study many different aspects of animal life ranging from animal behaviour and ecology to the evolution of animals.

The Level 3 Zoology qualification will cover a broad range of topics to equip students with the knowledge to kick-start a career in the field of zoology. Students completing the Level 3 Zoology course may go on to further study or may work in conservation organisations, zoos, aquariums, wildlife parks, conservation organisations or animal and environmental charities. Study Hours

Guided learning hours is 120. However, you’ll also be expected to allocate hours for writing assignments and additional research.

Study Method

The course is specially designed for study by distance learning. Throughout the course, there will be self-assessment questions, and tutor marked assignments (TMAs), to enable you to monitor your progress.

Course Duration

You have up to a year to complete this course and we have included a suggested number of study hours. The TQT is 450 hours, which is more than ample time for learners, even with full-time jobs and other commitments. Don’t worry if you go over the year though, we can organise an extension to your course for an additional fee, which also extends your tutor support.


Each unit is followed by a written tutor-marked assignment (TMA), which is submitted and then marked by your tutor. You will not be required to take an external exam.

At the end of this course, successful learners will receive a certificate of completion and competency.

  • Name and discuss the five kingdoms

  • Discuss species identification
3: Principles of Animal Physiology
  • Understand different types of respiratory and circulatory systems in animals
  • Define different feeding types and the process of digestion
  • Understand temperature and water regulation in animals
  • Discuss how animals move
  • Understand how animals reproduce
4: Introduction to Ethology
  • Understand the evolutionary development of animal behaviour
  • Examine the main categories of animal behaviour
  • Interpret group behaviours in animals
  • Define the different learning theories
5: Understanding Ecology
  • Define the terms ‘autecology’, ‘synecology’ and ‘keystone species’.
  • Understand the principles of basic ecological surveying.
  • Discuss niches and habitat types.
6: Conservation
  • Explain why some species are more susceptible to decline
  • Outline ways to prioritise conservation efforts
  • Defne in-situ and ex-situ conservation
  • Discuss species reintroduction projects
7: Zoo Science
  • Discuss the basic information required to manage animals in zoos
