Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is a standalone specialist qualification for learners wishing to develop the skills and knowledge to specialise in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. This qualification aims to develop knowledge and skills relevant to a particular specialisation within an occupation or set of occupations.

Our TEFL course is for learners with little or no experience of teaching English. The aim is to develop the introductory knowledge and skills required to begin to teach English as a foreign language. The qualification develops learners’ knowledge of the English language and how to teach it; how to assess the needs of learners; prepare lesson plans and materials; identify resources and adapt to the needs of younger learners

What you will learn

  1. Unit 1 - Principles of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (R/506/8712)

    In this unit you will understand the current role of English as a global language. You will also explore modern methodologies and best classroom practice, which will include – behaviourism, audiolingualism, The ‘natural way’ and humanistic approaches.

  2. Unit 2 - Understanding English Grammar (D/506/8714)

    In this unit you will learn about word classes, tense, person, number, syntax and punctuation and their uses in English grammar.

     

     

  3. Unit 3 - Teaching English Grammar (K/506/8716)

    In this unit you will be able to present grammatical structures and meaning in context. You will understand how to select the target language that is appropriate to the linguistic level of the learners. You will also be able to assess, grade and correct language for teaching purposes.

  4. Unit 4 – Teaching English Vocabulary

    In this unit you will understand how to select appropriate techniques and strategies for the teaching of vocabulary.

     

     

  5. Unit 5 – Teaching Productive Skills: Speaking and Writing (A/506/8722)

    In this unit you will learn how to distinguish between accuracy and fluency. You will investigate a range of communication activities. You will explore the stages inherent in developing the productive skills of writing and speaking. You will also be able to introduce ways of teaching speaking and writing skills.

  6. Unit 6 – Teaching Receptive Skills: Listening and Reading (F/506/8723)

    As part of this unit, you will learn different types of listening and reading skills and the various ways in which they can be taught.

     

     

  7. Unit 7 – Materials and Aids for Teaching English (L/506/8725)

    In this unit you will evaluate a range of electronic and non-electronic media types available to the modern ELT classroom. You will also explore the benefits of using authentic materials in teaching.

  8. Unit 8 – Teaching Pronunciation of English (R/506/8726)

    In this unit you will develop an understanding of basic phonetics and phonology and their practical applications within the classroom. You will learn how to teach pronunciation and the acquisition of an appropriate level of stress rhythm and intonation. You will explore how the learner’s primary language can interfere in the second language acquisition process as related to effective pronunciation.

  9. Unit 9 – Lesson Planning for Teaching English as a Foreign Language (D/506/8728)

    During this unit you will know what forms an effective lesson plan, including how to set it appropriate to the language and ability of the target group. You will understand the value of various interactive modes available between learners and teachers.

  10. Unit 10 – Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Young Learners (D/506/8731)

    In this unit you will know the principles of teaching 5-16 year old learners including how to design lessons and activities appropriate to the linguistic needs and purposes of 5-16 year old learners.

  11. Unit 11 – Use Resources Effectively when Teaching English as a Foreign Language (H/506/8732)

    This unit will teach you how to evaluate course books and other texts. You will then be able to integrate this in to your planning and schemes of work. You will also know how to effectively use the internet as a resource.

Course Outcome

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be awarded the TQUK Level 5 Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. This qualification is independently accredited and aligns with Level 5 of the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

How is this Course Assessed?

Your progress throughout the course will be evaluated through a comprehensive portfolio of evidence. This portfolio will showcase your learning across various assessment criteria, including essays, projects, professional discussions, and other relevant documentation.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be at least 16 years old to enroll in this course. Additionally, you will undergo an initial assessment of your English, mathematics, and ICT skills to ensure you meet the course requirements.
