NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training

This Level 3 Personal Training certification course aims to develop learners’ existing knowledge and skills in gym instruction who would like to pursue a career in personal training. The NCFE Certificate in Personal Training is a nationally recognised qualification. It also provides access to The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at level 3.

A fitness instructor/personal trainer’s role includes designing and implementing exercise programmes for a range of individual clients by collecting and analysing client information to ensure the effectiveness of personal exercise programmes. A personal trainer should also actively encourage potential clients/members to join and adhere to regular exercise programmes, employing appropriate motivational strategies to achieve this.

On this course, you will:

  • Explore anatomy and physiology, functional kinesiology and concepts and components of fitness
  • Gain the knowledge and skills to successfully gather and analyse client information using the most accepted techniques

  • Be provided with the knowledge and skills to be able to plan and conduct a physical activity session, within a variety of environments using multiple resources and possess the knowledge and skills to perform a client consultation using the most accepted methods and providing strategies for successful behaviour change.
  • Be able to communicate effectively to build successful relationships with their clients and other health care professionals
  • Be able to prepare for employment or to set up in business on a self-employed basis
  • Possess the knowledge and skills to be able to manage, evaluate and improve own performance
  • Be able to provide learners with the knowledge to be able to offer nutritional advice for physical activity based on clients’ needs.

Study Hours

Up to 240 hours which is under 40 minutes per day for 12 months.

Course Duration

You have up to a year to complete this course, this is usually ample time for learners, even with full time jobs and other commitments. However, should you require long, please contact one of our course advisers with regards to an extension.The approximate guided hours for this course is 245 hours.

Study Method

Throughout this course, you may be expected to complete assignments, essays, research projects, posters, leaflets, presentations, PowerPoint presentations, video/audio recordings, work-based and practical learning sessions to meet the requirements of your course. This is a blended learning course, which means some of your study will be done at home, some will be done face to face with your tutor, and all of your practical assessment will take place at our Birmingham-based assessment centre. All information about your course will be included in your study pack detailing exactly what you need to do to accomplish your goals as a student.

  • This qualification comprises of seven mandatory units. Learners who have achieved a QCF Level 2 Fitness Instructing qualification or an NQF NCFE Level 2 Fitness Instructing qualification (500/1803/6) or equivalent (Skills Active have agreed exemption for these specific NQF qualifications) will have already achieved the following three units at Level 2: (Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity M/600/9015 / Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment T/600/9016 / Principles of exercise, fitness and health A/600/9017)
  • Learners who hold a Level 2 qualification in Gym instructing which is not an agreed equivalent/ exemption to the three units detailed above may require further guidance and support to ensure the correct learning pathway is selected to achieve the required units. Successful achievement of all seven mandatory units must be achieved for the full qualification. The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary.
  • There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) and application of number involved, and learners should have basic skills in communication and application of number pitched at levels 3 and 2 respectively.

This course is assessed by a variety of methods.

Unit 1: Theory paper (6 Credits)

Unit 2: Theory Paper and Case study (6 Credits)

Unit 3: Case Study and Worksheet (7 Units)

Unit 4: Summative observed session and Session self-evaluation (9 Units)


This course is assessed in three different ways: multiple-choice examinations, practical assessments and a portfolio which you work on during your course. Successful completion of all three units must be achieved for the full qualification.

Assessment Day

Attending assessment days is a vital part of passing this NCFE qualification. On the assessment day, you will complete the your multiple-choice examinations under the supervision of your course tutor. Our practical days run on an “on demand” basis in small groups. You may have to wait a short time while we fill the other practical spaces. Our assessment centre is based in Birmingham. How many times you’ll need to come to our assessment centre in Birmingham will relate to how well you progress on your course. Each assessment day you attend will cost £100.

Course Outcomes
  • At the end of this course, successful learners will receive an NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training. This means that you will achieve a Level 3 qualification on The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Your qualification is accredited by NCFE, one of the UK’s leading Ofqual approved awarding bodies in the health, fitness and active leisure sector. This qualification will provide level 3 entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). REPs are an independent public register which provides regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet National Occupational Standards agreed by the health and fitness industry. This will enable you to obtain public liability insurance to practice as a Gym Instructor.
  • Membership with REPs is valued and respected, enhancing employability, and is recognised in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

  • Understand the heart and circulatory system and its relation to exercise and health
  • Understand the musculoskeletal system and its relation to exercise
  • Understand postural and core stability
  • Understand the nervous system and its relation to exercise
  • Understand the endocrine system and its relation to exercise and health
  • Understand energy systems and their relation to exercise

You will have access to your personal tutor, via email and telephone, who will mark your assignments and guide you through the course. In addition, you will be supplied with a comprehensive Study Guide which will help you through the study and assessment process. Your personal tutor will be highly experienced in their subject area and qualified to teach.

You don’t need any prior skills in the subject area to start. However, as with all of our courses, we recommend a reasonable level of English reading and writing ability.

We provide all the specially written learning materials you require to study this course at home. The course fee also includes tutor support for 12 months.

No, all of the study materials are supplied within your learning pack.

In addition to your course fee, you will need to pay £100 for each assessment day you attend. How many days you need to attend will be dependent on how you progress on the course, students normally need between 1-3 assessment dates.

Yes, there will be short tests that you will sit on your assessment day in order to pass this qualification.

The theory aspect of the course, which takes the majority of the study hours can be completed from anywhere in world. However, you will need to be able to attend our practical assessment day based in Birmingham, UK to complete your qualification.

That’s fine, this course can be studied anywhere and is completed by submitting Tutor marked assignments (TMAs).
