Overview

Whether you’re a complete beginner looking to learn the essential knowledge and skills needed to work in payroll, or a more experienced bookkeeper looking to gain a nationally recognised and respected qualification, our ICB Level 3 Diploma in Payroll Management is the course for you!

Specifically designed for those who want to learn Sage from home and develop their computerised payroll bookkeeping skills quickly and conveniently, this ICB payroll course and qualification covers all the theoretical knowledge you’ll need, along with helpful demonstrations including tables and publications issued by HMRC. In short, if you’re a bookkeeper, plan to work as one, or simply want to keep your company’s payroll affairs in excellent shape, then this payroll course is essential. After you’ve completed this course, you’ll have free ICB student membership (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers) for six months, along with six months’ free access to Sage Payroll, the most commonly used bookkeeping software.

What you'll learn

Unit 1 - Book One

In this section, you’ll learn about all the different elements of the payroll system, such as PAYE and NICs, as well as other elements like national insurance contributions, and look at how to figure out exactly which employees should be subject to which deductions. You’ll also look at tax codes and pay as you earn, with practical examples to help you figure out how to apply a tax code to calculate the amount due on a weekly and monthly basis. Moving on, you’ll look at directors’ payroll, as well as using PAYE in Scotland and Wales, as well as gaining an understanding of statutory and voluntary deductions, and much more!

Unit 2 - Book Two

In the second section, you’ll look at the various reasons K codes are used, and how to apply them. You’ll also study and understand entitlements to statutory maternity, paternity, and adoption pay, as well as how to calculate the relevant amounts due to employees who use these schemes. Next, you’ll look at calculating student loan deductions, and understand the nature of voluntary deductions. Moving on, you’ll look at pensions and benefits in kind, calculating the benefit that arises from company policies such as car and private medical schemes. Finally, you’ll aim to understand the basic theory that underpins the tax-deduction scheme of the construction industry, why the scheme was set up, how to identify who needs to be registered, and more.

Should I study Bookkeeping OR Accounting?

Bookkeeping is an element of accounting. It’s quicker to get qualified, meaning it’s a faster route to kick-starting a new career. However, you don’t have to choose one or the other. You can study both bookkeeping and accounting simultaneously, or you can become a qualified bookkeeper first, and then expand your skill set by studying an accountancy course later. Since all our bookkeeping and accountancy courses are online, you can even fit your studies around your work.

What opportunities are there, after I’ve completed my online bookkeeping course?

The demand for bookkeepers is expected to keep rising. As a result, there will always be opportunities for talented and certified individuals.

Ensuring you are technically competent is vital, given the rise of lots of new bookkeeping and accountancy tools that are disrupting the marketplace. The majority of these tools are designed and developed to make your life easier. With new technologies such as automatic receipt recognition, so as to avoid time-inefficient tasks like entering bills and receipts manually.
