FAQs

Sorry there are no results for your query, please contact us below.

What is Functional Skills Level 1 equivalent to?

All Level 1 Functional Skills courses are equivalent to a GCSE English grade 1 to 3 (previously D to G).

Level 2 Functional Skills are equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 (previously grade C).

Should I enrol on a Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills course?

This is entirely up to you. If you already have some knowledge in your chosen area of study, you may wish to start with Level 2. If you’d prefer to begin with the basics, then you may choose to start with a Level 1 Functional Skills course.

Do I need to complete a Level 1 Functional Skill before starting Level 2?

No. If you already have some knowledge in your chosen area of study you are welcome to enrol straight onto a Level 2 Functional Skills course. You do not need to complete a Level 1 Functional Skills course before starting Level 2.

Why study functional skills with Oxbridge?

You can study any of our functional skills courses online in the comfort of your own home, at your own pace, making it the perfect option if you have a full-time job or specific family commitments.

When you invest in a functional skills distance learning course, you’ll gain access to expert tutors who are on hand to help every step of the way. We take pride in the quality of our courses and have a fantastic student pass rate.

If you’re unsure which level you should take first, speak with one of our learning advisers. They’ll love to help.

How long do functional skills take to complete?

You have up to six months to complete a functional skills course at level one or two or a bundle covering both. However, our students generally complete these courses in two-to-four months.

Our students who take on the complete bundle at level 2 are also given six months to complete the course, but again, they tend to pass much more quickly than that – within five months on average.

As you can see, you are given plenty of time to get through whichever functional skills course you opt for.

How many times can you take functional skills courses?

As many times as required. While the structure of our courses and the support of our expert tutors means that most students pass first time, all functional skills courses can be taken and retaken as many times as needed.

Where courses have individually graded units, if just one unit is failed, you only need to retake that unit in order to gain your certification.

Do employers like functional skills?

Yes, functional skills qualifications look good to employers. While GCSEs are the “standard” employers ask for, many will happily accept functional skills qualifications in their place.

This is due to the courses’ focus on teaching real-world problem-solving skills.

Do Universities accept functional skills?

Most UK Universities accept level 2 functional skills qualifications in place of GCSEs, with a level 2 functional skills qualification recognised as a direct equivalent to a GCSE grade C and above.

It’s often course-dependent, so we advise that you check with your intended university or future provider that they are happy to accept Functional Skills courses, just to be sure.

Are key skills the same as functional skills?

Key skills and functional skills refer to the same set of qualifications. While they are often used interchangeably, today “key skills” are officially known as “functional skills”. Functional skills were first introduced in 2010 and formerly replaced key skills in 2012.

What comes under functional skills / core skills?

Functional skills courses cover either MathsEnglish or ICT. You can also invest in bundles such as maths and English combined or take all three functional skills subjects in one go. All subjects are separated into two levels, although you don’t have to take a level 1 course to progress onto level 2.

What is a functional skills qualification?

Functional skills teach students specific competencies that can be attributed to daily life. Although level 2 functional skills qualifications are given the same merit as a GCSE course, it can be argued that these are even more important, as they don’t operate on theoretical knowledge but on ways to navigate real-world situations.

I started my course recently and I have to say that I am over the moon with the support and customer service that I have received so far! I choose Oxbridge as I really wanted to get back into education but as I have a 4 year old I knew a full time course down the traditional route just wasn’t going to be possible for me. From my initial enquiry, to my enrolment and support from my tutor i have always received 5 star service! I couldn’t be more happier and would definatly recommend them!

A dream come true
trustpilot rating
I have always wanted to be a teacher but time got away with me and I found that I was 32 before I knew it, had 2 children, and not enough job security or finance to give up my work and go to college, not to mention not having the time. Oxbridge made this possible for me. It has taken 17 months for me to complete my course but I am so pleased with that as it isn’t easy studying, working and being a mum. The course was very thorough and at times I thought my tutor was needing to much from me – but she stood me in good stead for passing the course so I am really grateful for all she did. I am now a few steps closer to achieving my goal. The site is very easy to navigate around which is one of the reasons I chose Oxbridge. I enrolled online and the process was very smooth, I opted to pay in instalments, that was sorted out very quickly and within 24 hours I had my logins to the course I had chosen. The online portal was good, I was worried about this as I am a visual person, but it was interactive, colourful, and not just reems of text on paper or a screen, which is something else I was worried about! I have just received my certificate Hurray! I am sorry about calling I know you got them to me as quickly as possible and I am very thankful to Heather and Katie for keeping me informed and not losing patience with me and for sending the certificate to me so swiftly in such a difficult time. Very efficient, always quick to respond and an absolute pleasure to deal with such lovely people throughout. Thank you for all your help and support, it has been a very positive experience and I would most definitely recommend.

I enrolled with Oxbridge about 10 months ago and the whole experience from start to finish has been wonderful. My tutor has been so supportive, throughout and anything that I have needed help with has been responded to is such a quick timeframe. Like most people I suppose, I have had some issues with home-schooling, the children in general, working from home and adjusting to the new normal, but Oxbridge have supported me throughout. I know that if I had of gone to college I would not be in the position I am now, don’t get me wrong, you do have to be motivated, but being able to study at your own speed has been amazing. I think I was one of the first to try out the new learning portal, which was easy to navigate and easy to submit my work to. The feedback has always been excellent and encouraging. I am delighted to be able to say I have been able to secure a promotion thanks to the qualification and I think in this uncertain time that’s amazing. The student support team have always been great, and sympathetic to my needs. I have today re-enrolled onto the next level with Kelly, who was absolutely amazing, her knowledge was phenomenal and she really understood my career path and goals so thank you Kelly, I very much appreciate it. She also enrolled me on to some free short courses, they may prove useful in the future if I apply for other roles. Looking forward to getting started (again) and moving onto the next chapter of my learning.

trustpilot rating
I enrolled with Oxbridge for the STL Level 3 Certificate in February and I have really enjoyed the process. It took me years to build up the confidence to go for what I wanted and the thought of going to a college to do it made me want to hide away. Finding Oxbridge was like a light at the end of the tunnel and I have not regretted it one bit. Being able to work around my 3 young children, work and volunteering in a school all day, was one of the best things about taking the course with Oxbridge. I cannot thank my tutor Kerry Ore enough for all of the support she has given me throughout my learning journey. Any time I emailed with a query, I had a reply from Kerry within minutes. When I sent Units to her to be marked, they were marked and sent back within days (I think the longest was around a week), or if there was anything that needed to be added to a unit I was made aware of it quickly. Kerry is absolutely amazing and is a credit to Oxbridge. The course material was fantastic along with the online learning portal and it was laid out in a way that is easy to understand. The interactive scenario's were fab too. I have thoroughly enjoyed doing this course and building on my skills and knowledge. This course has given me new found confidence too. I have enjoyed my experience that much, that I will be enquiring about new courses in the coming months (I'm going to enjoy this achievement for a while first :) ). Thank you very much Oxbridge and a special thank you Kerry Ore :)

I was so apprehensive when i was looking to do an online course, i decided to try a few companies first and i then came across Oxbridge i spoke with a lovely lady called Hayley, she talked me through all of the course even repeating herself several time so i could fully understand! Hayley explained the out come of my qualification and when i told her i needed this course to be able to attend University she really put my mind at ease. She knew exactly what i needed. I went a few days thinking and contacting other companies but i felt as though Hayley at Oxbridge really really understood and wanted to help she emailed me details over the few days and i just had a feeling this was the company for me. i called the college i spoke with a pleasant lady in student support who put me through to Hayley, Hayley knew exactly what to do and i signed up, i haven't looked back the tutor support has been brilliant. If iv needed to ask advice quickly i have called the college or popped on the online chat and one of the team have answered any query i have had. I can honestly say they have been great and so supportive of my future. I want to thank Oxbridge a great deal for allowing me to succeed in my career . Thank you all at Oxbridge
