What makes a good manager?

The pain of the recent England football team’s performance in this summer’s Euros is probably still fresh in many of your minds. Former Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce has been named as the new England manager – not an easy job. What makes a good manager? Well, the core skills needed to be a good football manager are, in fact no, different than management in general.

Maybe you are thinking about moving into management, either where you currently work or in a different organisation. To manage the transition, you need to understand what it takes to be a good manager.

Communicate

Talking to people in both a respectful and professional manner is an important part of being a manager. This includes being able to give both positive and negative feedback in a constructive way. Good communication also means being able to disseminate information in a clear and effective manner.

Motivate others

Being able to understand the different abilities and preferences of your team also can help with overall motivation. This is because you then can provide opportunities that are based on their individual needs. This will make your team members feel valued and can increase loyalty.

Understand your team

Each team will include people with different strengths and personality types. Some will prefer to work in a more autonomous way, while others will like to lead. Therefore, by understanding your team, you will be able to place people in positions that best suit their skills and also to monitor progression.

Delegate

This is an oft-underrated skill, but it is crucial, as it will help you manage your own workload and remain organised. Delegation also allows members of the team to take on new and challenging responsibilities, which then allows growth. When delegating, it is useful to state objectives that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound (SMART) or even better SMARTER, with the addition of Ethical and Recorded.

Deal with conflict

It’s going to happen, so you need to be able to manage it, what makes a good manager is someone who can deal with it effectively. It is impossible to please everyone, and there will be times when you have to make tough decisions. Lead by example

Being able to set an example is an important part of being manager. You need to practice what you preach, which includes avoiding double standards. This means sticking to promises and following the rules that you have set. This builds trust and mutual respect.
