Do you work in the beauty industry? Have you wondered how to start your own beauty business?

The beauty industry is one of the most versatile and rewarding areas of employment. As a result, a lot of qualified beauticians consider starting their own beauty businesses. In fact, this may be something you are considering at the moment. As the beauty industry continues to grow, so does the demand for qualified professionals. There are specific requirements that you will need for your own beauty business to be a success.

Business plan

The first step to take is to develop a business plan. This is not as scary as it sounds. A business plan simply allows you to look ahead to all the key milestones for your business and measure your progress. It should cover your objectives, marketing strategy and financial projections. You should plan ahead for at least the first year, but you may also want to plan beyond this.

Budget

You will need to calculate the costs of setting up your own business. Operating freelance will mean you avoid the costs associated with opening your own salon, which can be considerable. However, you do need to consider the cost of purchasing the required equipment and treatment materials for your business, as well as marketing costs. Starting your own business can mean a lot of upfront financial commitment, which can take a while to recoup as your business grows.

Insurance

Having the correct insurance in place for your business is vital for the beauty industry, as this will protect both you and your clients. This will involve getting public and product liability insurance and professional indemnity. You should also protect your equipment through insurance to have complete peace of mind.

Awareness of the competition

It is a good idea to have a look at what other local freelance beauticians and salons are offering. This way, you can ensure you are competitive; both in regards to the range of treatments you offer and also the prices of your services. You may also notice a gap in the market in regards to treatments being offered, which could give you the edge.

Equipment and treatments

You will need to consider the range of beauty treatments and products you wish to offer. This will then dictate the equipment and materials you will need to purchase upfront. Hopefully, you will have already gained the required beauty qualifications. However, if you want to offer a wider range of treatments at a later stage, you may need to consider the cost of investing in further training.

Name

Now comes the fun part – naming your business! Thinking of a name for your business can actually take longer than you may imagine. Once you start coming up some names, you will need to check that these have not already been registered. You don’t want to have thought of the perfect name for your business and then find out it has already been taken. You will need to contact the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) before making a definite decision on the name.
